Properly centering a gear

Does anyone have any tips for properly centering a gear on an axle? I've found myself having to repeatedly test the spin on a gear until it's within acceptable "wobble" limits to operate. Any specific "snapped" dimensions/ratios for gears that would help with this? Thanks in advance for any advice, I'll be tinkering in the meantime.

Re: Properly centering a gear

The easiest way (I think) do get gears/wheels centred on axles is to turn on Snap.
It's pretty damn hard to line things up without using Snap, but the default snap grid is way too big for my liking.

Here's how to set snap:

Turn on Snap in the bottom right corner of the main window.

Hit Esc to open the menu, and click on the Environment tab.

Change the Grid Spacing size from 1.0 to something smaller. Typically 0.25 or 0.5 is good for smaller machines.

I find it works well to set the Grid Spacing by dividing 1 in multiples of 2 (1.0, 0.5, 0.25, 0.125) Just helps everything line up better emoticon
It will take a bit of getting used to, but it'll help you make smoother-running machines.

Helpful?

In addition to what Capn Gladus said, if you want precision, use powers of 2 or their sums for fractions
(1/2,1/4,3/4,1/8...0.5,0.25,0.75,0.125...).
And remember that you can change the location of an object precisely using the settings window for that object(select object and hit enter).
