The contact works as such:
It obtains input from both the input wire and any contacts touching it, then it outputs the sum of the inputs to the output wire and any contact touching it. So, without it, you'd just have a bunch of contacts outputing "0".
If you want a touch sensor, use the Touch Sensor tool.

I have both in my pinball machine post. The touch sensors are hooked up to the rockets for effect and the contacts are hooked up to the bumpers to know when the pinball pushes down on them enough.
