Gear issues

I've been noticing a lot, lately, that gears are terrible in this. They're really glitchy and tend to slam back into the opposite direction for seemingly no reason. I've enclosed the link to a simple test with a gear as an example. Holding down space bar should make it spin counter-clockwise, but it'll suddenly spin back in the other direction or even stop altogether. It's kind of a pain, since anything complex will obviously require gears.

Re: Gear issues

I was spinning mine counter-clockwise, so in your example it would be the "S" key. It spins fine for a little while, but then seems to get caught and start spinning the opposite direction.

I noticed it at first when I was using the 4 cylinder engine that someone posted here. It would work fine for about 5-10 seconds, but then the gears would stop for a second. I tried fixing the issue by making the gears a little bit smaller, but the same thing would keep happening. I'm not sure if it's the program itself, or maybe how my computer handles it, but it seems to happen to even the single gear like in my example.

Here's a video I captured of the gears catching. https://www.dropbox.com/s/3m9wh7ave8uaf8d/gears.avi

Re: Gear issues

I think this is the stroboscope effect.
On the cylinder star rotates in one direction.
Actually everything is rotating correctly.
To test the large map image on every gear.
The number of teeth on the gear is a multiple of the number of frames and speed.
Try a little speed.
Install a different number of FPS in the settings.

Re: Gear issues

You're right Dougler, those gears are definitely jamming in that video.
Elektronbrain, watch that star spinning, it stops at 4 seconds, 7 seconds and 9 seconds.

I never really use gears in my machines, they've always been too dodgy. :P

No! Stroboscope effect 100%.
I tested different methods.
The teeth of the gears do not spin the other way.

Re: Gear issues

I would say from my experience you all are right.

Stroboscope happens often in Golems.

As far as the gears stopping and reversing, it's because one of the gears ends up moving faster or slower and the edge of the gear collides with the wall of the teeth on the other. I'll work up a test as soon as I can.

I noticed a problem when I was working on a transmission, and I worked to find optimal gear settings by testing different variables side by side.
